Today Flore Laurentienne, the unparalleled project by composer, orchestrator and musician Mathieu David Gagnon, unveils a new song entitled “Au couchant,” whilst also announcing a new collaboration between Flore Laurentienne and Secret City Records. This new release arrives shortly before his residency from November 28 to December 2 at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MBAM), where the composer will work in a room featuring works by Jean Paul Riopelle, whom he selected for the depth of his art and its engagement with landscapes. A major concert at the MBAM’s Salle Bourgie will follow on March 23. Tickets are on sale now. A new album is set for release in spring 2024.
Flore Laurentienne shares the inspiration behind his new song: ”’Au couchant’ refers to the story behind Jean Paul Riopelle’s “L’hommage à Rosa Luxemburg.” Intentionally sparse, the song conveys a laissez aller, a detachment. The absence of melody becomes a melody in itself, inviting the listener to enter a contemplative, open-minded state.”
Flore Laurentienne’s albums “Volume 1” and “Volume 2,” released via Costume Records, charmed audiences and critics alike. He won two Félix at the 2020 Gala de l’ADISQ, as well as the Best Experimental Album prize at GAMIQ the same year. His albums also earned several other nominations at the Gala de l’ADISQ and the JUNO Awards, and “Volume 1” was included on the long list of the prestigious Polaris Music Prize. The song “Fleuve No. 1” was heard during the opening of the Chanel fashion show during the 2022 Paris Fashion Week.
Flore Laurentienne skillfully mixes electronic music with classical music influences. The project aims to push the boundaries of various musical genres such as ambient, experimental, and progressive rock.
