Today Patrick Watson unveils “Perfect Day (Komorebi Version),” a solo piano cover of Lou Reed’s cult song. It is available today on all streaming platforms. Recorded for the German/Japanese film “Perfect Days” by Wim Wenders, the track echoes Patrick Watson’s latest solo piano release, “Ode to Vivian (Rework).”

“This is a song I recorded for the film Perfect Days by Wim Wenders which received an Oscar nomination. It is a special track for me,” Patrick tells us. “One reason being that it is an honour to participate in a Wim Wenders’ film. It’s an incredibly touching story, film and cast. When I saw Perfect Days, I was intensely proud to be part of such a beautiful project. This film is filled with little pockets of hope that you get to keep with you when you leave the theatre, which is hard to come by these days. The other thing about the track is it is a cover of one of my favourite songs, Perfect Day by Lou Reed.”
The film “Perfect Days” combines four short stories featuring a protagonist called Hiramaya, who cleans public toilets in the city of Tokyo. The film was part of the Palme d’Or competition of the latest Cannes Film Festival, where it premiered on May 25, 2023. It’s now nominated in the “Best International Film” category at the Oscars, which are taking place on March 10. The film just opened in theatres in the United States and Canada. This isn’t the first collaboration between Wim Wenders and Patrick Watson, who previously worked together on the 3D film “Every Thing Will Be Fine,” which was released in 2015.
The song “Perfect Day” was written by Lou Reed in 1972. It first appeared on the now iconic album Transformer, which was produced by David Bowie and Mick Ronson. The song received worldwide attention in the ’90s following the massive success of Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting.
