Flore Laurentienne, the experimental electronic classical project by Mathieu David Gagnon, will release 8 tableaux (Deluxe) on Friday, September 13th via Secret City Records. The outfit today releases another single, “La nuit bleue (Bourgie).” The new track follows “Les oies III,” which premiered on KEXP’s show Pacific Notions. The release date coincides with the kick-off of a string of fall tour dates, where the synth and strings quintet will support avant-garde composer William Basinski as well as one special date with Colin Stetson at the El Rey Theatre in LA. Next year, he’ll be part of Big Ears Festival 2025. All live dates are listed below.
Listen to “La nuit bleue (Bourgie)” HERE.
Seemingly infinite, “La nuit bleue (Bourgie)” repeats its chords and melodies for a hypnotic effect. These musical loops compound on top of each other, allowing different sections of the song additional or lessened gravitas without interrupting the endless musical movement. “La nuit bleue (Bourgie)” plays into Gagnon’s unique concept of the “musical freeze-frame,” a state where the music possesses no discernible beginning nor end. As the layered elements of the song fade away, revealing the simple melody beneath, the trance slowly dissolves, leaving the listener soothed and satisfied. La nuit bleue (Bourgie) is an orchestral version of a piece by the same name, which appears on the album 8 tableaux. It was recorded during a concert on March 24th in the Salle Bourgie at the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal.
8 tableaux (Deluxe) features four new songs, each expanding Gagnon’s method of transmuting visual art into a musical form, inspired by the works of Quebecois painter and sculptor, Jean-Paul Riopelle. Like Basinski, Gagnon’s work demands close attention to detail. The result is contemplative, soothing music whose beauty grows as the patient listener begins to detect the various pieces at play in Flore Laurentienne’s music.
